IYG

Every year young people from around the world, children and grandchildren of IPA members of IPA members, are invited to visit another country and participate in an event that many will never forget - the IPA's International Youth Gathering (IYG).

For the participants it is an opportunity to experience travel to another country and to meet people of a similar age from different cultures and backgrounds whilst gaining a deeper knowledge of the history, social character, nature and family life of the hosting country.

The International Youth Gathering programme conforms to the international spirit and aims of the International Police Association.

Participation in the programme is open to the children or grandchildren of current IPA members. IYG participants must have reached 15 years but not have exceeded 18 years at the start of the IYG - this is to make it easier for the Organising Section to produce an interesting and instructive programme for participants of a similar age group.Young people at an IYG will be permitted without distinction as to sex, race, colour, language or religion.

IYG 2019 - International Youth Gathering, 03rd - 17th August 2019

Organised by IPA Croatia

The event is a chance for the children or grandchildren of IPA members to take part in an action-packed 2-week programme.

Hosted annually by a different IPA section, around fifty 16-17 year olds are invited to participate and enjoy various activities to encourage an ‘international spirit’, and often strong, long-lasting friendships are formed.

Past IYG's have included activities such as:

Visits to theme parks

City tours

Boat trips

Activities such as paintballing, raft building and kayaking

Safaris

Trips to famous sports venues

Visits to the local police facilities

The IPA Section Switzerland is going to send at least 2 young people and of course with a financial support of CHF 1'000. Announce candidates through your IPA Region

Procedure for New Zealand Applicants

Any current IPA member who wishes to have their child, grandchild or great grandchild participate in a gathering should firstly contact their Regional Secretary to confirm the venue and dates of future IYGs, and to request application forms and other documentation.

The young people need to write a brief CV about themselves, and why they would like to attend the IYG, their interests and hobbies.

Documentation is usually found on the hosting countries website or the IAC's website.

Completed applications, endorsed by the regional committee, are to be sent to the Secretary General of the New Zealand section of IPA, (to reach her / him by 31st December in each year) who will arrange for all applications to be seen by the selection committee.

Once selections have been made, the decision will be communicated to all applicants and the appropriate regional secretaries.

The cost of participation is set by the host country. The NZ Section may contribute funds to cover all or part of the registration fees. Travel costs are, however, the responsibility of the applicant.

What the panel looks for when submitting IYG application form:

- Correctly filled in application form off the hosting country website

- A covering letter explaining

- Being trustworthy, reliable, ability to make sensible decisions.

- Interest in developing skills, further leadership, cultural, positive role model

- Previous travel, interest in participating in other cultures

- See this as an opportunity to make contact/friendships with other YP some that may last a life time

- Who is the IPA connection?  [Granddaughter, son etc]

- See this as an opportunity to represent NZ and the NZ Section of IPA

- A photo of the person

- Letter of support and approval of short leave of absence from school

- CV with Achievements / interests – copies of certificates always good

- Letters of reference from employers [not always applicable but good if they have one]

- Basically all that you would put into a CV

- A copy of Passport

Organising an IYG

National Sections who wish to arrange IYGs will forward a written application to the International Secretary General not later than 90 days before the commencement of a World Congress or IEC Meeting. IEC approval is required at least twelve months prior to the proposed Gathering.

The International Secretary General will present the application to the PEB and if accepted, present the application as a proposal from the PEB to the next World Congress or IEC Meeting.
